What types of programs or activities can be sponsored for continuing education for psychologists?
Programs of just about any size, format, and delivery method can potentially be sponsored for continuing education credit. Appropriateness of the activity depends primarily on the content. Activities must build appropriately on a foundation of doctoral education in psychology. A psychologist must be involved in the planning of the activity, there must be clear learning objectives, and the activity must be based on a sound methodological, theoretical, research, or practice knowledge base. We can help you determine if your activity satisfies the appropriate criteria.
Does APA approve the continuing education activity?
No. APA approves individual sponsors of activities (such as Southeastern Professional Development) but not the activities themselves. It is the responsibility of the sponsor to ensure that all appropriate APA guidelines are followed. Sponsors report their activities to APA, and must periodically renew their sponsorship approval.
What are the requirements for a sponsored activity?
Activities that are appropriate in terms of planning, instructional methods, and program content must still adhere to a number of requirements relating to promotional materials, appropriate disclosures, amount of credit offered, and program evaluation. Southeastern Professional Development can assist with implementation of a program in a way that satisfies these requirements.
Can continuing education credit for psychologists be offered for programs that also offer credit to other professionals?
Yes, provided all appropriate requirements are met and the content is determined to be appropriate for psychologists.
Who determines whether program content is appropriate for psychologists?
Southeastern Professional Development is ultimately responsible for insuring that program content is appropriate and all requirements are met. Our Program Administrator can assist you in determining whether your activity is appropriate. Southeastern Professional Development also maintains an advisory board of experienced psychologists who can assist in this process as needed.
How early in the planning process does Southeastern Professional Development need to be involved?
Provided that content and instructional methods are appropriate and a psychologist has been involved in the planning of the activity, Southeastern Professional Development does not necessarily need to be involved from "day one." It is, however, critical that we be involved before any announcements or promotional materials are distributed (not including "save the date" type announcements). These materials will need to be reviewed to ensure compliance with APA requirements.
Does Southeastern Professional Development offer platforms or technical support for online CE activities?
Not presently, although this is an area targeted for expansion. In the near future, we hope to offer webinar and online training with registration and payment support. Eventually, we also hope to add on-demand access (e.g., to a recorded webinar) in the future.
What costs are involved in sponsorship of continuing education activities?
Fees for CE activity sponsorship cover the administrative time involved in assisting with the planning and implementation of the activity, as well as maintaining appropriate documentation and analyzing program evaluation data. The actual fee will depend on a number of factors including the size of the activity and the time involved. Special pricing may be available for recurring activities or activities offered by not-for-profit entities (e.g., universities, community agencies, professional organizations, etc). Our Program Administrator can discuss your needs and provide you with a quote for services.
Does Southeastern Professional Development sponsor continuing education for other disciplines?
Not presently, but plans are in place to expand offerings for social workers, LPCs, and Certified Rehabilitation Counselors.
